Tom Yeates Airboy #37 Cover Original Art (Eclipse, 1988). Airboy, Skywolf, and Valkyrie are featured - guns blazing - on this fantastic cover! Yeates has a masterful use of light and shadow and it is on full display here. Don't miss the two marginal notes that give a great behind-the-scenes view of comic production. The top margin note says "Tom - add Valk", and sure enough the figure of the femme fatale has been added to the art with a printed paste-up. The bottom margin has a no-punches-pulled note from Tom that says "Rubber Cement comes off. Glue stick doesn't. Please don't use that crap on my artwork, or anyone elses you give a damn about." And if you flip up the acetate overlay of the paste-up logo and header info, you can see a small strip of abrasion on the board just below another note that reads "No Glue Stick!! See what it does?" The art was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10.25" x 15.5". The board is lightly toned and in Very Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
