Steve Ditko The Collector Fanzine #26 Wraparound Cover Mr. A Original Art (Bill Wilson, 1972). Legendary comic creator Steve Ditko is most-known for co-creating the amazing Spider-Man. But fans of his work know that he also created many other characters, some of which had a decidedly political slant to them... such as The Question and Hawk & Dove. But none more-so than Mr. A. Influenced by the writings of Ayn Rand, Ditko's Mr. A walked in a grey world with morals that were as black and white as the comic page he was printed on. This fanzine cover really describes the character best, and in Ditko's own words:
"A is A. A thing is what it is. No man can have it both ways. Only through black and white principles can Man distinguish between Good and Evil. The principles guide Man's basic choice of actions. Men can attempt to choose contradictions, grey principles, like men can choose to be dishonest, corrupt, but that choice only leads to Evil - to Self-Destruction!"
Even the artwork makes this clear, as Mr. A walks the "straight and narrow path" that leads through corruption, deceit, and dishonesty all round him.
This really was Ditko at his zenith. He had eschewed most comic work over his principles, and was mainly creating only self-owned characters when he was published. He would freelance for several different companies for many years after this, but it never had the same heart and soul as his work from this time period.
Boldly created in beautiful black ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 18.5" x 12.25". The title/issue/price information in the top right corner is stat paste-up. The Mr. A description text is hand-lettered paste-up. There is some whiteout art correction in places. The board is lightly toned, and in otherwise Excellent condition.
