DescriptionS. R. Boldero (as S.R. Boldero) Nothing To Declare Cover Original (Consul Books, 1957). Boldero had as much bearing as the authors themselves upon the selling of many British paperback thrillers. The bold sensationalism of his art is fully in evidence on this début novel from Roderick Mann, a show-business journalist who also proved a compelling fictioneer. Not only is the painting superbly accomplished -- even the title logotype and lettering are inlaid by hand, in assured and precise strokes. (Only the publisher's logo is a pre-printed paste-in.) A masterful study in suspenseful composition, with a haunting profile. A marginal note refers to another novel, unrelated to the present selection. Opaque watercolor over graphite on pebble-grained Whatman illustration board. Image area, 10.25" x 13.75". Moderate age-toning, barked corners, and marginal pin-punctures. Logotype has fallen away from spine (lower left), and the byline shows chipping in the white paint. Very Good condition.
