Spain Rodriguez Subvert Comics #1 Cover Original Art (Rip Off Press, 1970). Manuel "Spain" Rodriguez was one of the most interesting members of the celebrated Zap Comix crew. He was a biker during the 1950s in his hometown of Buffalo, New York, and he often featured exploits of the Road Vultures in his stories. His book Che: A Graphic Biography was hailed as "brilliant and radical" by Art Spiegelman, and those words could be used to describe Spain as well. In 2013, less than a year after his death from cancer, he was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame.
This cover, the first from his three-issue Subvert series, features Trashman, a character popularized in the pages of the East Village Other, one of the earliest publishers of Underground Comix art. The cover is in ink with added red ink, whiteout, and Zipatone shading film, on Bristol board with a printed blue grid; the masthead logo material is drawn on a separate piece of board and pasted in position. The overall image area is approximately 8.25" x 11.5". In Very Good condition with handing wear. This piece was included in the Chazen Museum of Art's "Underground Classics" exhibit in 2009, and is featured on page 114 of the accompanying book Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix. From the Eric Sack Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
