Skip Williamson - Bijou Funnies #5 Cover Recreation Original Art (undated). Skip Williamson recreates his cover for Bijou Funnies #5, which originally hit the head shops in 1972. It satirized the superhero genre's iron-fisted rule over comic books, even over the Underground Comix. The heroic figure at center stage bears more than a passing resemblance to the artist; it must be his adolescent power-dream alter-ego. Skip was one of the founding fathers of the underground comix movement. A Chicago native, he began cartooning in the alternative newspapers The Chicago Mirror and The Chicago Seed. In 1968 he co-produced, with Robert Crumb and Jay Lynch, Bijou Funnies, one of the earliest and longest-running Underground comics titles. This piece is painted in vivid acrylic hues on board, and measures an overall 26" x 32" . The art is in Excellent condition, and is imbued with the same brand of cantankerous satire that has made Williamson a comix legend.
