DescriptionRuss Heath All-American Men of War #101 Cover Original Art (DC, 1964). Heath became a founder-by-default of the Pop Art movement when Roy Lichtenstein cribbed from a Heath war-comic page of 1962 to fabricate a large-scale Pop painting called Blam! Heath remains the Genuine Article, famous knockoffs notwithstanding. This slightly later cover drawing demonstrates his superiority. Almost monumental in scope and intensity, the study finds Johnny Cloud, Navajo ace pilot, performing a rescue while locked in mortal combat. One of the more memorable images of the Silver Age, to put it mildly. Heath also employs collage technique to integrate the title logotype with the artwork: The pre-printed All-American banner and the letters of Men of War are cut out individually and pasted meticulously in place, creating an almost seamless fusion with the background crosshatching. Signed as R.H. in lower left quadrant. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with painted white highlights and drybrush shading. An image area of 12.5" x 18.5". Moderate toning. Excellent condition.
