Description

Roy G. Krenkel The Chessmen of Mars Paperback Cover Original Art (Ace Books, 1962). One of the most celebrated sword-and-planet paperback covers of all time, The Chessmen of Mars cover features Gahan of Gathol dueling a Martian opponent atop a checkered black-and-yellow floor -- a visual representation of the Jetan board, which plays a key role in the gladiatorial scenes and serves as a crucial element in the novel's climax. Chessman is the fifth novel in Edgar Rice Burroughs' famed Barsoom series, centered around the world of pulp hero John Carter, who remains a constant presence throughout the saga even when he isn't the lead character. Serving as something of a bridge between classic pulp illustration and modern fantasy artists, Roy G. Krenkel rendered this epic scene in mixed media on Bristol board with an image area of 8" x 9". Tape pulls along the bottom, spot stains in the left margin, marginal notes, and corner/edge wear. A copy of the published paperback is included. In Very Good condition.
