Robert Crumb The People's Comics Cover Original Art (Golden Gate Publishing, 1972). By 1972, Robert Crumb was nothing short of a basket case. Burned out from fame -- the fanboys, the pushy businessmen, the have-nots looking for a hand-out -- it all helped turn Crumb into a withdrawn, bitter young man for a few years. Pushing him over the edge was the Ralph Bakshi animated feature film Fritz the Cat, a project Crumb wanted no part of (the contracts were signed by his estranged first wife after Robert split). Still, he kept on producing comics, and even though they were somewhat more mean-spirited than his earlier work, the art kept getting better and better. Here's a great example of his mid-1970s work, the cover to The People's Comics. This is the infamous comic that featured "Fritz the Cat Superstar", the story where Robert kills off the character he had drawn since early childhood. The cover art is ink on bristol, with an image area of approximately 8.75" x 12.75". It's in Excellent condition.
