Description

Robert Crumb The Complete Crumb Comics V9 Cover Original Art (Fantagraphics, 1992). Crumb's confrontational stance as a cartoonist often has placed him at odds with the feminist movement, which has characterized him as a misogynist. Crumb's characteristic response has been to raise the ante on the controversial material. Even in retrospect, Crumb makes a point of counter-heckling his nay-sayers. (This piece primarily serves an archival function of heralding a 1992 anthology of much earlier work.) His satirical edge remains as sharp as ever, and just as antagonistic, however playful and good-humored. Crumb also exhibits the gumption to depict himself in an unflattering light, exaggerating his posture and general appearance to self-ridiculing effect. As a founding figure in the original Underground Comix phenomenon of the last century, Crumb also has adjusted the scales in a historical sense, publishing essential autobiographical work by such feminist artists as Aline Kominski-Crumb (his wife) and Dori Seda, and encouraging his daughter, Sophie Crumb, to seek her own directions as a working artist. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 10.5" x 12.5". Glass-framed to 18.25" x 20.5". Excellent condition.
