Description

Robert Crumb Snatch Sampler Cover/Bookplate Illustration Original Art (c. 1974). R. Crumb's comic art has stirred up more than it's fair share of controversy over the years, usually for Crumb's unbridled, anything-goes approach to sexual themes, but also for his comic depiction of Black characters. His Angelfood McSpade character, with her exaggerated facial features and patois slang, has made activists and liberals angry for years, reaching the point where Crumb no longer will draw her today. Back in the 1970s, he was still headstrong about drawing outrageous material, and when he was approached by the publishers of the comics prozine Promethean Enterprises about doing art for their series of bookplates, he turned in a piece featuring a wildly stereotyped African native woman and her smaller "po' relashun" male riding along on her leg, with a Crumb-like white "B'wana" male sitting on her ample behind, reading a copy of "I Have Suffered Greatly." Funny stuff to be sure, but a million miles away from today's "political correctness" movement! In 1977, publisher Keith Green reused the image (with a couple of small art changes) as the cover to a paperback compilation of erotic comic stories originally printed in Snatch Comics and other titles. The art, done in graphite and india ink on paper, has an image of approximately 8" x 10"; the page has some tape along the top edge, away from the image, but is otherwise in Excellent condition. Included with the art is a copy of Snatch Sampler, plus an enlarged color copy of the printed cover.
