DescriptionRobert Crumb Snatch Comics #2 Unused Cover Original Art (1968). Robert Crumb is considered one of the most prolific artists of our generation. This was especially true during his early Comix career, in the late sixties. Crumb filled countless sketchbooks with cover ideas, and for some notable publications, he created finished works of art that, for one reason or another, wound up unused. This rejected cover for the second issue of the notorious sex comic Snatch, is one of his most famous. The published cover included an image of his still-controversial character Angelfood McSpade, which may point to the reason this quite-delightful image of a young cheerleader and a group of admiring (ok, leering) men looks pretty tame by comparison. Shocking their audience was the hallmark of the Underground cartoonists, after all!
We can't help but love this cheerful image, though, and apparently, we're not alone in our admiration. The artwork has seen print a number of times in various exhibits and collections of R. Crumb comics and art, including the German museum hardcover Yeah, But Is It Art? (2004), and a 2005 French compilation of Snatch Comics, where it landed on the back cover, in full color.
The art is in ink over light graphite on a sheet of blue-grid printed board, with an approximate image area of 5" x 6.5". The art is matted and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 20.5" x 17.75:. Excellent condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.
