    Description

Robert Crumb Kozmic Komix Unused Cover Original Art (1967). In 1967, newly liberated from a soul-crushing 9-to-5 job in Cleveland and relocated to swinging San Francisco, Robert Crumb chased after his dream of having his own comic book published. This is one of his early covers for what would become Zap Comix, featuring the first version of a gag that would eventually appear as the cover to Zap #0. Crumb has stated that during this time, he created a number of comic book covers, but had trouble working up stories to go with them. He finally got past that in October, 1967 when he drew what would be published as Zap Comix #0.
This cover art is in ink on paper, with an approximate image area of 8.5" x 9.75". It's matted and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 17.25" x 19.5". Excellent condition. The art finally saw print in several books, including Yeah, But Is It Art?, a deluxe museum catalog book of R. Crumb art published in Germany, in 2004. From the Eric Sack Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
