Description
Robert Crumb King of the Freaks Cover Unpublished Original Art and Related Letterhead Copy Group of 2 (Anaconda Press, 1981). Johnny Eck's fascinating autobiography never saw print -- the death of the contracted publisher left the project in seemingly permanent limbo. Eck (né Eckhart; 1911-1991) was a sideshow entertainer and a graphic artist - born without a lower torso, but sufficiently resourceful and agile to develop a varied career in motion pictures and design (Tod Browning's carney-life film of 1932, Freaks, features Eck as "the Half-Boy"). Crumb's handwritten personal note (reverse) affords back-story information. An accompanying photocopy reproduces Eck's letterhead (which incorporated the art with Crumb's permission), with a detail from Crumb's environmental portrait.
