    Description

Robert Crumb Coney Island Baby Cover Original Art (East River Records, 2017). Those who know famed Underground Comix artist R. Crumb also know of his tremendous love of old-time music. Crumb himself is a musician, as well as one of the world's foremost collectors of old Blues and Jazz 78 RPM records. Here is an original painting Robert created for Eden and John's East River String Band, fronted by the husband and wife team of John Heneghan and Eden Brower. This is for their newest album/CD. We reached out to Robert for information on this incredible piece, and he replied, "Heneghan is selling the original artwork for this cover at my instigation. He is in need of money and I urged him to sell it through Heritage. It took some persuading as he was very reluctant to let it go. I'd given him the original, in exchange for many rare old 78s. It is all watercolor. There are no ink lines. It was a week's work in the making. It kinda goes without saying that I also had a personal inspiration in this since I am also deeply involved in the music, and the musicians are friends of mine. One of the clowns behind the lovely Eden is yours truly, playing the mandolin!"
Robert Crumb's worldwide fame really began with the "Cheap Thrills" cover art he created for Janis Joplin's band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, back in 1968, and he has gone on to create many other covers over the years, mostly compilations of obscure 1920s-'30s Blues tunes. We believe "Coney Island Baby" is one of his very best cover pieces. It's without a doubt one of the most impressive recent originals by Robert Crumb we've seen, created in the look and feel of an old circus poster. The artwork measures 12.5" x 12.5", and is matted and framed with glass for an overall size of 17.5" x 17.5". The condition is Excellent.
