Robert Crumb Black and White Comics Back Cover Original Art (Apex Novelties, 1973). Let's get this straight -- R. Crumb does not play by the rules! At least he didn't with this oh-so politically incorrect back cover strip titled "The Experimental Comic Workshop Presents Will Shade & Ishman Bracey in 'Those Goddamn Blues'." Taken with a grain of salt, this is pretty funny stuff, in a kind of Amos and Andy vein that one could never get away with today -- in fact, you couldn't do this in 1973 either, but Robert Crumb does not play by the rules! The art is in ink (mechanical pen, Crumb's artistic instrument of choice) over light pencils on Bristol board, with an approximate image area of 8" x 12". A small amount of handling has left the artboard with a very minor crease in the upper left corner, out of the image area, and a slightly sun-struck appearance from an old framing; otherwise, it's in Excellent condition. A copy of Black and White Comics that had been matted with the art, back cover showing, is included, but with masking tape still on the front.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
