Robert Crumb Barrelhouse Blues Unused Album Cover Original Art (1970). While his fans all love his comic art, R. Crumb's number one passion (not including women, of course), has to be music over art -- namely, recordings made in the 1920s and '30s by obscure Blues musicians, found on scratchy old 78 RPM records. Crumb has been an avid collector of these old records since his teens, and has been actively involved with companies who reissue these rare songs. This piece of art is one of his earliest attempts to create cover art for these reissues. It's one of the few times Crumb abandoned the Rapidograph mechanical pens he had been using, since his time as a color separator at American Greetings, in favor of markers. The result is a softer image, with the marker lines looking a bit purple, rather than black. This is one of several covers Crumb did for his friend George Paulus' Barrelhouse Records, established in 1969. It was intended for release #BH-09; the final version (also by Crumb) was released as Bring Me Another Half-a-Pint in 1976. The artwork is on paper, with an approximate image area of 12.25" x 12.5", matted and framed using Plexiglas for an overall size of 20.25" x 21.25". The image appears in the 2004 German museum hardcover book, Yeah, But Is It Art?, on page 231. It was also included in a 2012 Paris art exhibit. The paper shows a minor amount of creasing, mainly in the open area intended for display lettering. Very Good overall condition. Signed (as "R. Crumb was here 1970") within the brick wall along the right side of the art. From the Eric Sack Collection.More information about Robert Crumb, also known as Crumb, Robert, Robert Crumb, Crumb, R., R. Crumb.
