DescriptionRobert Crumb A Benefit Portfolio In Defense of the First Amendment - Unpublished Weirdo #18 Cover Original Art (Last Gasp/CBLDF, 1987). The unused cover for Weirdo #18 is a true rarity for Crumb collectors! Produced in 1986, it was replaced with a pastiche of typical "women's magazines" of the time. This piece also features a small printed paste-up in the lower right of the character that showed up on the cover of issue #14 (and a different version of him was featured on issue #20). Although unused for Weirdo, this cover art did eventually grace the retail packaging for a series of R. Crumb pinback buttons. Produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12" x 15.25". Signed in the lower left corner, in Excellent condition.
In 1986, comic shop clerk Michael Correa was arrested and charged with selling obscene material. Publisher Dennis Kitchen spearheaded a unique project to raise money to help with Correa's legal expenses. This benefit portfolio led to the formation of the non-profit organization The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. This is a historic piece of original art that helped to change the comic industry by providing comic creators, publishers, and retailers facing prosecution with a resource for financial assistance.
