Description

Rick Griffin All Stars #2 Cover Shading Plate Only Original Art (San Francisco Comic Book Company, 1970). Griffin, best known for his San Francisco rock-concert posters of the psychedelic period, knew no boundaries as a cartoonist. He bridged, as well, the surfing-cartoon craze, the hot-rod culture, and the Underground Comix scene. The multi-artist All Stars (also known as Allstars) yielded this provocative cover, depicting a struggle between sacred and profane influences. This surviving plate from the full-color master design contains hand-applied black ink and shading film over a blue-line copy of the basic artwork. (The image, logotype, and dialogue balloons are complete, but only in black and blue. The solid-black areas account for various hues on the published version.) Ink and blue-line print on illustration board. Image area, 11" x 15.5". Pronounced moisture staining and peeled area at right margin, extending slightly into image. Good condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.
