Description
Peter Poplaski (as "POP") Comix Book #1 Unpublished Cover Original Art and Production Materials Group of 4 (Kitchen Sink Press/Marvel, 1974). Publisher Denis Kitchen was more than prepared for the début of Comix Book as an unprecedented fusion of the maverick Underground Comix scene with the corporate clout and mass-market distribution resources of Marvel Comics. The cover-design process included some never-seen compositions in anticipation of a final version. This lively crowd scene (with numerous caricatures of famous faces) was among the more obscure stages of evolution: It's a beauty, rewarding intensive viewing with one surprise after another. The Comix Book experiment was naturally controversial, what with its assertion of creators' rights over Marvel's customary work-for-hire policy, and the title's survival through three issues proved too good to be true. Marvel at length bowed out, leaving Kitchen to deliver a closing two issues as a purely Underground title. Ink and shading film over graphite on illustration board, with an image area of 15" x 18.5". Accompanied by color-plate production materials including a black-outlined version and a color guide. Excellent condition.From the Denis Kitchen Collection.
