Percy L. Crosby Life Magazine May 21, 1925 Skippy "Radio Number" Cover Illustration Original Art (Life, 1925). In the early twenties cartoonist-illustrator, Percy L. Crosby debuted his world-famous kid character, Skippy, in the pages of Life Magazine. A short time later, Skippy debuted as a nationally syndicated comic strip. In a rarity for the time, Crosby retained the copyright on his character. In 1925, he registered Skippy as a national trademark. Skippy chronicled the misadventures of a young iconoclast and rascal, Skippy Skinner. At the height of Skippy's popularity in the early thirties, Crosby pulled in $2,000 a week from his syndicated strip. As noted comic art expert and collector John Province has written, "Percy Crosby was a wonderful artist, as well as a socio/political philosopher. Skippy was the Peanuts of its day, with deceptively obscured multi-layered gags delivered in a scrappy streetwise manner. He hit dead-center more often than not, and for this, Percy Crosby and Skippy enjoyed widespread national popularity (and disdain). His work not only occasionally tugs at the heart, but wryly comments and provides worthwhile food for thought." Crosby's work has famously influenced other world-class cartoonists such as Charles Schulz and Bill Watterson, among many others. This uproarious ink and watercolor illustration, captioned, "Yeh! The radio set you sold -- No! It don't work," has an image area of 19.5" x 13", and the art is in Very Good condition.
