DescriptionNorman Nodel - Classics Illustrated #71 "The Man Who Laughs" Painted Cover Original Art (Gilberton, 1962). This cover painting for Victor Hugo's novel of the life and times of a disfigured young man and his surrogate family in southern England. This painting is interesting in that the composition was mirrored for publication; a copy of the comic book (a New Zealand edition) confirms this, and is included in this lot. It is also interesting to note that the original painting has much more texture and detail than is evident in the published image. Some historians have noted the similarities between the title character and the comic book villain the Joker, especially Conrad Veidt's portrayal of the character in the 1927 Hollywood film adaptation. The work is on illustration board and has an image area of 14.5" x 21". Other than some chipping and wear at the edges of the board (outside the image area), this piece is in Very Good condition.
