Nick Cardy Teen Titans #20 Cover "Titans Fit The Battle of Jericho" Original Art (DC, 1969). A wonderfully dramatic cover, and one that has an historic and murky behind-the-scenes story to it! The caped figure in the background, Joshua, was actually supposed to be the very first black superhero at DC comics, pre-dating John Stewart as Green Lantern. The story was accepted by one editor, drawn, but then rejected by the new editor. Reasons vary (depending on who you ask) from "overly preachy/bad writing" to "DC just wasn't ready to break that color barrier". So the story had to be re-written and drawn by Neal Adams (using only a few of the original pages); however, they had to use this original cover by Nick Cardy as it had already been printed! Cover-featured Titans are the core-four: Robin (Dick Grayson), Speedy, Kid Flash (Wally West), and Wonder Girl. Produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The paste-up logo is missing from the cover, leaving glue residue, and there are pinholes in the top margin. There is a thin fixative protective layer over the artwork. Overall in Very Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
