DescriptionNick Cardy - Original Cover Art for Unexpected #142 (DC, 1972). This cover shows off Nick Cardy in his heyday, as he brings to life the moment of maximum danger from a DC "mystery" story. DC couldn't call theses titles "horror" books in the early days of the comics code, and the subject matter was circumscribed, but Cardy's work ranks with the best horror cover artists of an earlier era. While sled dogs stir suddenly to alertness, their master still slumbers, as a frozen cave man bursts out of his icy prison. Cardy expertly uses white-out as part of his inking repertoire to create a glassy sheen on the ice. The image is 10" x 15" and the page is signed by Cardy below the image area.
