Description

Mort Drucker MAD #393 "Peanuts" Cover Original Art (EC Publ., 2000). The timing of Drucker's large-scale Peanuts parody painting is significant: Charles M. Schulz, originator of the celebrated comic strip and one of the world's most influential cartoonists, had died a few months before the arrival of this issue, which touted "The Final Peanuts Episodes You Never Saw!" and delivered the goods accordingly. The backhanded memorial razz starts with Drucker's depiction of what one might call "Charlie Brown's Revenge" on the cover. Seen in its unaltered, near-monumental format, the composition contains details that are missing from or transformed in the published version: Drucker's signature was removed by narrow cropping; the football (essential to a recurring visual gag in Peanuts) was removed; and the bird-character, Woodstock, was digitally cloned and flopped to the opposite side, to better compensate for the drastic right-hand cropping. Drucker captures that distinctive Schulz style, down to the finer intrinsic delicacy of the slight quiver in the ink-outlines. Ink and watercolors over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 18" x 22.5". In Excellent condition.
From the Mort Drucker Collection.
