Description

Michael Netzer (as Mike Nasser) and Bob Wiacek Tomb of Darkness #22 Unused Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1976). A hulking monster with an uncanny resemblance to the Hulk waits in the shadows, brandishing a massive ax, while his younger brother ushers a lady inside to see how much he's "changed". This unused cover mirrors the published version closely, but was ultimately rejected as the ax was deemed too large, too violent, and too evocative of EC horror even in the more relaxed Comics Code climate of the '70s. In the final published version, the ax was removed and the monster instead lunges from the shadows, though the rest of the composition remained largely intact. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15.5". Light toning, smudging, pulled-tape abrasions on top edge, whiteout corrections, adhesive residue staining on left edge, and handling wear. Signed by the artists in the lower right corner and in Very Good condition.
