Michael Kaluta Doorway to Nightmare #1 Cover Original Art (DC, 1978). This captivating cover featuring a stunning image of the lovely and mysterious Madame Xanadu is also her very first appearance! Fan-favorite artist Mike Kaluta designed the character and provided the covers for all five issues in this short-lived series, and as great as they all are, none of the other covers are as powerfully enticing as this one! Those eyes are mesmerizing. The model for this character is the equally lovely Cathy Ann Thiele and this cover art was personalized and given to her as a gift by Mr. Kaluta himself. Ms. Thiele was also the model for Kaluta's hostess character from Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion, who was retroactively named "Charity" in the pages of Starman. The character of Madame Xanadu has appeared on and off in many DC comics, usually keeping to the shadows and background of the DCU. Crafted in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The cover art has a taped 3" diagonal tear in the very top (however it does not go anywhere near the figure itself), and a very minor stain in the top edge just above the personalization. Simply one of the most gorgeous Michael Kaluta covers ever, this piece has resided in a private collection since the 1970s, never appearing on the market, and is clean and bright in overall Very Good condition.
