Description

Michael Golden Marvel Fanfare #1 Spider-Man and the Angel Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1982). One of the best and most beloved Golden covers is this spectacular scene taking place in the Savage Land! We have even heard a collector or two rank this among their all-time favorite 1980s Marvel covers. While Golden was a hit with fans pretty much from the start, his few critics characterized his style as "cartoony"... surely these few dissenters were silenced by his dead-on rendering of a pterodactyl here. Golden penciled and inked the cover which is signed with his trademark "G" at lower left. An interesting side note is in the indicia below the image area, where "Marvel Team-Up" is corrected to Marvel Fanfare. Likely it was simply a misunderstanding -- Golden never had a story published in the Team-Up title and it had been two years since writer Chris Claremont was on that book -- but it is possible that the cover and story were intended for the other title at some point. Perhaps supporting the latter theory is the fact that a UPC code box was originally drawn here and whited-out -- Marvel Fanfare was a Direct Sales-only title, and those did not carry UPC boxes back then. The fact that the bottom half of the cover had no other text boxes let comic readers enjoy the full impact of this dynamic scene, and the same is true for anyone who looks at the art now! The piece has been in a private collection for three decades, and we're thrilled to offer it to our bidders.
Produced in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an approximate image area of 9.75" x 15". The art has been professionally cleaned. Excellent condition.
