DescriptionMarie Severin and Gil Kane - Original Cover Art for Alter Ego #10 (Alter Ego 1969). To highlight a lengthy Gil Kane interview featured in this, the penultimate issue of the original run of this seminal fanzine, editor Roy Thomas recruited Marie Severin to render a pencil portrait of the inimitable Mr. Kane to run as the issue's cover. Kane then added two sidebar montages to complement the drawing, and the result is the terrific piece offered here, probably one of the only Alter Ego covers ever to come to public auction. The Kane portrait was penciled on textured paper, and then cut-and-pasted onto the larger layout sheet. The right montage panel (including Kane's signature) is unfortunately a stat, but the actual artwork is intact beneath the stat (it seems to have been statted to move it down slightly, to improve the composition), though probably glue-stained. The logo and all text is original. A true piece of comic fan-history, and a wonderful piece of art to boot. Excellent condition overall, with moderate-to-heavy use of white-out (especially in the Kane caricature), and some discoloration. Measures 11" x 16", with an image area of 8.5" x 11.5".
