Lou Fine - Original Cover Art for Hit Comics #11 (Quality, 1941). Jim Steranko's examples and description of Lou Fine's work in his second 1972 volume The Steranko History of Comics reminded the comic book community of this largely forgotten Golden Age artistic genius. Since then, his comics have become some of the most sought after by collectors of every time period and genre. The work that Fine did for Hit Comics is regarded as the finest that he produced. This piece is stunning in its depiction of a taunt Hercules, muscles straining with an underlying balletic grace which contrasts brilliantly with the savage fury of the bears. Each line of the bears' fur has been deftly placed in a detailed approach that others choose only to suggest. The realistic figure modeling and spacial relations of the image elements that Fine was able to bring to his cover art were perfect for the medium. This work of art has been professionally matted and framed to an overall size of 19" x 24" with an image area of 13.5" x 18.5". The title mast area is a reproduced stat, while the text blurb to the left of the bear is the original that was hand rendered on the illustration board.
