John Thompson Tales of Tales #1 Unpublished Cover Original Art (1973). Mystical and mysterious, the art of John Thompson has confused, aroused, thrilled, and befuddled readers of Underground Comix for years. Thompson's intricate line art is certainly like no other artist's work. Perhaps it was the environment Thompson grew up in -- Carmel, California, home to free-thinking artists for many years. Maybe it was the drugs -- Thompson lived right in the heart of Haight-Ashbury during the sixties, contributing art to rock posters. Who knows what caused Thompson's "third eye" to grow, but by 1969, his comics began appearing with titles like The Kingdom of Heaven is Within You and Tales From the Sphinx, filled with thought-provoking artwork like this unpublished cover. The art is in ink on two conjoined pieces of Bristol board, for an overall image size of 12" x 18". A third piece of board, with redrawn faces of the woman and man in the illustration, had been lightly taped to the art, but has since worked loose; it is also included. The old tape has left a yellowed stain; overall condition is Very Good. This cover art is featured on page 129 in the book, Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics Into Comix by James Danky and Denis Kitchen and was a part of the "Underground Classics" exhibition at the Chazen Museum of Art in 2009. From the Eric Sack Collection.
