Description

John Severin - Two-Fisted Tales #36 Cover Recreation Original Art (Russ Cochran, 1980). In 1953, John Severin started working for EC Comics, producing beautifully rendered westerns and war stories. He eventually became chief artist and editor on the classic comic Two-Fisted Tales. Here is a beautiful sample of Severin's mastery of the Old Western image... a recreated cover based on the original version of the January 1954 issue of The New Two-Fisted Tales #36, penciled and inked by Severin. This piece, drawn for Russ Cochran's series, The Complete EC Library, shows an artist who has clearly mastered every minute detail of the scene, a gritty tableau of lawmen and desperados, sand and smoking Colts. The image size is 11" x 15.5" on a 13.5" x 18.5" piece of illustration board. There is an overall yellowing, but it is uniform across the entire piece and doesn't detract from the image. Includes the original logo and indicia paste ups.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
