Description
John Romita Sr. The Amazing Spider-Man #72 Shocker Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1969). Shocker sends Spidey's Spider-Signal splintering with a seismic surge on this spectacularly shocking Silver Age cover! Making only his second appearance, following his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #46 two years earlier with a cool costume and gimmicky gadget, Shocker returned with a bang -- ready to rattle Spidey's world and send serious tremors through his life as he carved out his place among the web-head's villainous pantheon. Humble Herman Schultz has remained a steadfast jolt to Spidey's system, always ready to shake things up across Spider-Man's titles to disrupt Peter Parker's equilibrium. He has even powered his way onto both the small and big screens, appearing in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, The Spectacular Spider-Man, the Spider-Man: Homecoming feature film, and the 2018 Spider-Man PlayStation video game.Romita drew many a memorable cover during his celebrated tenure on ASM, but this one is especially notable, as it was reprinted in Stan Lee's 1974 book Origins of Marvel Comics as part of the only Spidey story other than Amazing Fantasy #15 to be included. Rendered in ink over graphite on cover stock Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". A production paper frame was affixed over the art board to block off the correct image area, displaying tape and production notes. The piece is lightly toned, with stat paste-ups used for the title and trade dress, which are reinforced with tape and are slightly curling at the edges. The lower story title is a hand-lettered paste-up, held in place with production tape. There are also whiteout corrections, spots of soiling and staining, scratch effects, and handling wear. The original art has been mounted and Plexiglas-front framed alongside a copy of the published comic to a total size of 27" x 24.5". The frame has some corner wear and a few spots of scratching on the glass. The cover art is signed by Romita at the bottom of the production frame. Presents in Very Good condition.
