John Romita, Sr. - Original Cover Art for The Spectacular Spider-Man Special Edition #1 (Marvel, 1975). Considered by many to be the finest Spider-artist ever to waggle a web, John Romita started his turn on the Amazing Arachnid aping Steve Ditko's style, but quickly found his own voice on the character. For many collectors, Romita's version of Ol' Web-Head is definitive, and stands as the epitome of comic art from Marvel's Silver Age. Offered here is the original cover art to one of Marvel's Treasury Editions, a format with which they experimented with some success in the 1970s. Fully rendered on vellum, this cover features Spider-Man facing off against the Sinister Six, an awesome array of his most fearsome foes. Measuring approximately 12.5" x 16.75" overall, with an image area of approximately 11" x 15.5", this cover has had some restoration work done to it. The art is entirely original, but the logos and type are stats, and the whole piece has been mounted to artboard. In excellent condition, and a great piece for any Spidey-collector, the art has been signed by Romita in the lower right corner. Due to the overwhelming success of the recent blockbuster movie, Spider-mania is sweeping the nation, making related collectibles even hotter than usual. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own a truly unique piece of comics history.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
