Description

John Romita Sr. Defenders #10 Cover Thor vs Hulk Original Art and Cover Proof (Marvel, 1973). It's the first Marvel Bronze Age "Battle of the Behemoths"! Most every Marvel cover in any age is a battle scene. It's what Timely/Atlas/Marvel superheroes do - battle super-villains and each other. But covers with Super-Heavyweights going at it are more rare than you might think, and by any standard, Hulk and Thor rank as two of the relatively few who can be classified in the Super-Heavyweight division. The two uneasy allies have been featured in comics, cartoons, and, of course, in recent Marvel movies. They will appear together again in 2017 for the Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok. John Romita's bold and masterful cover for this issue was part of the epic Avengers/Defenders War storyline. Steve Englehart's sensational story took eight issues (four from each title) to tell and was the first epic cross-over tale of this magnitude from any comic company. It set the stage for the "Event" driven series of decades to come.
On the cover, the floating heads of the original four Defenders (Hulk, Doctor Strange, Namor, and Silver Surfer), were joined by the Valkyrie and Hawkeye for the first time. Known as Marvel's "Non-Team", the Defenders will soon be a Netflix series starring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist (each of whom will have his/her own series on the network by then).
Romita originally signed the art "JR" on the far left edge of the image area. It is produced in ink over blue pencil on Vellum that is affixed to Bristol board with a 10" x 15" image area. All floating heads, logo, and text are original art paste-ups. The original stats used to reverse the text in the top cover caption are included separately. There is a small piece of the top left margin corner that's missing. The cover has been professionally cleaned and restored, with the vellum being professionally conserved to Excellent condition.
As a bonus, the stunning piece comes with an uncut cover printer's proof in Excellent condition.
