Description

John Romita Sr. Amazing Spider-Man #109 Penciled Cover Original Art (1972, finished in 2007). "Jazzy" John Romita Sr. finishes his pencils on this classic Amazing Spider-Man cover, one he had begun in 1972 as a blue pencil sketch featuring Spidey and Dr. Strange rescuing Flash Thompson, in what John Romita has said is one of his favorite ever storylines. After completing his blue penciled art, John decided it would be enjoyable to finish the blue pencil original version he began in 1972, and in 2007 he finished the drawing, adding very detailed, full graphite directly over his original blue pencils; new logo photostats were also added on the Bristol board for an overall image area of 10" x 16.5".
We honestly feel Mr. Romita scored a solid home run with this now-finished cover piece, as his masterful pencil technique, with extra tonal work, has far more eye appeal than what an inked cover would have looked like!
The artboard has been attached with tape to a backing board. Romita signed the art in ink, at the bottom right (as seen in photos, including the blue penciled art before graphite was added; please note that this is not an additional page included with the lot). This art can be seen in the recently published IDW hardcover book John Romita's Amazing Spider-Man Artist's Edition Volume 2. The penciled art is in Excellent condition. This could well be your only chance to own an original 1970s Spider-Man cover showing Romita's wonderful pencil work, unadorned by another artist's inks! It's a must for any true blue Spider-Man fan -- 'nuff said!

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
