John Cassaday and Pat Quinn The Phantom #2 Cover Original Art (Moonstone Publ., 2004). An ominous presence in high-contrast outline, the groundbreaking costumed hero (since 1936) stands poised for a shoot-out at the entrance to his clandestine Skull Cave. This study in layered inks is a far cry from the published version, for which a color artist added a digital radiance. Co-penciller and inker Quinn provides precisely the right effect with a straightforward black-and-white counterbalance. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15".
