Description

John Byrne The Thing #1 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1983). From the rubble of Marvel Two-in-One rises the Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing, no longer sharing marquee space, but stepping squarely into his own spotlight. (And speaking of rubble, Byrne couldn't resist tucking The Flintstones' Barney Rubble into the debris for eagle-eyed fans!) This marked the first ongoing series devoted solely to Ben Grimm, who had anchored the Fantastic Four since 1961 and spent nine years trading punches and punchlines alongside a rotating cast of Marvel heroes.
At the time, John Byrne was revitalizing the FF as both writer and artist, and the moment felt right to let ol' Rocky carry a title on his own broad shoulders. The debut sends Ben back to Yancy Street, confronting a new generation of tough kids and trying to steer them clear of the mistakes he once made, grounding the series in character as much as clobberin'. The run would later dovetail into the seismic events of Secret Wars, reshaping his status quo and pulling him away from Earth and the FF for an extended stretch. But it all begins here, with Byrne's bold cover, a confident declaration that Ben Grimm doesn't need a team-up to command the page.
Produced in marker and ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 18.75". Slight toning, with creasing/handling wear, adhesive residue staining, lower right corner piece was reattached with tape on the reverse, minor ink bleed on the edges, and production tape on top edge. Signed by Byrne near the Thing's left leg and in Very Good condition.
