John Buscema and John Verpoorten - Original Cover Art for Marvel Tales #39 (Marvel, 1972). Doctor Otto Octavius has always been a favorite among Spider-Man's colorful Rogue's Gallery, and this outstanding Bronze Age cover highlights the good Doctor in all his glory, assaulting the Web-Slinger with both his costumed thugs and his steely metal arms. Can Spidey survive? We have a good feeling about the outcome, but that doesn't take away from the power of this splendiferous John Buscema composition, given weight and power by the slick Verpoorten inks. Seeing as how Doc Ock is the main villain in the upcoming 2004 "Spider-Man" feature film, this cover is a good bet for any collector! One of Ock's tentacles has been cut out and re-positioned, and there is moderate use of white-out, but this is in excellent shape for its vintage, with some light creasing at the corners that does not affect the artwork. The cover measures 11.5" x 17.5", with an image area of 10" x 15", and has been signed by John Buscema in the lower right margin.
