Description

John Buscema and Bob Hall (attributed) Tarzan #22 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1979). If there were a comic-book award for Best Dinosaur Stampede, then this energetic composition from action-master Buscema would be a contender. Buscema's vigorous art is its own reward, of course, and here is a high point from his hitch with Marvel's version of the Tarzan franchise. The special quality of this piece is that it shows the full figure of the Tyrannosaurus Rex (right), whose head in the published version had been obscured by the Tarzan logo. (E.R. Burroughs' Tarzan trademark has had many comic-book stewards, also including DC Comics and Dell Publishing in addition to Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.) The present selection illustrates a story called "War in Pellucidar," deriving from a matched set of Burroughs novels called At the Earth's Core and Pellucidar (1914-1915), to say nothing of Burroughs' own sequels and prose crossovers, Tanar of Pellucidar and Tarzan at the Earth's Core (1929-1930). Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 9.75" x 15". Excellent condition, with a few un-erased pencil lines (upper left) to signify logotype placement.
