Description

Joe Simon and Jack Kirby Stuntman #3 Unpublished Cover Original Art (Harvey, 1946). After the war, Simon and Kirby affiliated themselves with Harvey Comics, and had big plans for their new superhero series, Stuntman. Everything looked promising, and Harvey gave the new series a big push, but the post-war audience for comic books had by that time changed, and superheroes were on their way out, no matter how innovative they were. The ax fell just as issue #3 was being made ready to go to press; a shortened version of the issue wound up as a limited digest edition sent only to subscribers, with an inside splash now used as the cover. Pity, because this prepared cover would have really stood out on the newsstands; in fact, Joe Simon's book, The Comic Book Makers used a variation of this very illustration for its cover. The art is in ink over graphite on illustration board, with an overall image size of 13" x 18.75". Only the photostatted logo masthead remains, other than the artwork, but a set of photocopies includes the type elements that once was on the artboard. Overall condition is Good.
