Description

Joe Certa Charles Starrett as the Durango Kid Cover Original Art (Magazine Enterprises, 1951). The most striking quality here is that Certa drew the piece at actual publication size -- an unusual tactic during the Golden Age, when most such art was produced at twice the dimensions. The image captures the physical immensity of 6'2" Starrett, star of Columbia PIctures' long-running Durango Kid series. A bold radial foreshortening emphasizes the bad-guy character while anchoring the action in Starrett's fist. Certa also applied the photostat logotype with a collage technique, meticulously trimming to integrate the letters with the art. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with painted white highlights. Image area, 10" x 15". Light age toning and moderate adhesive staining. Very Good condition.
