Description

Jim Lee Deathblow #1 Cover Original Art (Image, 1993). The iconic cover image of the first issue of Deathblow! Jim Lee decided to take his art style in a totally new direction for the dark story of a military Special Forces operative faced with the ghosts of his past, on a quest for redemption while battling a terminal cancer diagnosis. The powerful close-up of Michael Cray is created in a hyper-detailed style which plays with light and shadow, making use of the positive/negative space in a way reminiscent of Frank Miller's artwork on Sin City... but Lee takes it to a whole new level, with detail that evokes a palpable energy which jumps off the page! What made the printed cover even more stunning was the the use of a spot varnish on a printed black background, which made the portrait seemingly rise out of the darkness. Ink over graphite on Image Bristol board with an image area of 10.5" x 13.75". Light handling wear. Some ink bleed on Lee's signature in the lower left image area. In Excellent condition.
From the Personal Collection of Jim Lee.
