Jim Aparo Adventure Comics #440 Spectre Cover Original Art (DC, 1975). This is the first Aparo Spectre cover we've had the privilege to offer, and it's sure to attract a lot of attention from collectors! The series that gave the Spectre a "new lease on life" ran in Adventure Comics #431 through this issue, #440. Editor Joe Orlando was reportedly mugged, and that event inspired this gruesomely violent series that was highly controversial at the time. Orlando plotted the stories of a vengeful Spectre with writer Michael Fleisher, and artist Jim Aparo rose to the challenge, coming a long way from his "Miss Bikini Luv" stories done in the 1960s for Charlton. The art is in ink over graphite on a sheet of DC Bristol board (actually, it's the back side, as the other is printed with a "DC 100 PAGES" masthead). The image size is 9.75" x 15". There is an area of discoloration on the character's image, possibly from contact with another item (the artboard did not have a paste-over that would have accounted for this). All of the "trade dress" elements (logo blurbs and text along the top edge) are original production stats, with tape holding some elements down. Jim Aparo signed the cover with his initials, and later added a signature along the bottom. Good condition. A nice copy of the printed comic is also included.
