Jeff Jones Sword of Sorcery #1 Alternate Unpublished Fafhrd the Barbarian and the Gray Mouser Cover Original Art (DC, c. 1973). "Know ye -- beyond the portals of the Castle of Shadows waits Death Himself." Celebrated for his evocative paperback covers of those Fritz Leiber sword-and-sorcery rogues, Fafhrd the Barbarian and the Gray Mouser, Jeff Jones was asked by DC to work his magic on a comic cover scene. Indeed, Jones had already created a few eye-popping DC cover classics with Wonder Woman #199 and #200. Oddly enough, Fafhrd and the Mouser actually made their DC debut in WW #202, late in 1972. Since that published Dick Giordano features Fafhrd in a very similar pose to this scene, some speculated that this unpublished masterpiece might have been slated for that issue. However, as a key note of provenance, when a previous owner acquired this piece directly from Jeff Jones, he was told it was definitely created for Sword of Sorcery #1, but shelved for Michael W. Kaluta and Howard Chaykin's version. In any case, this brilliant cover has an image area of 10.5" x 15", and it has been matted and framed to an overall size of 16.5" x 22". This spectacular find of the fantasy icons, from a peak period of Jeff Jones' comic career, is in Excellent condition -- don't balk at your chance to win it.
