Jack Sparling Challengers of the Unknown #65 Cover Original Art with Color Guide and Proof Group of 3 (DC Comics, 1968). One of the most important covers of a watershed experimental period for DC, Sparling's bold composition places the world-beating Challengers in a Ulysses-like situation, struggling to avoid a gigantic menace. This issue helped to pump new vigor into the Challengers series -- a Jack Kirby creation, which dated from the late 1950s and foreshadowed Marvel's Fantastic Four. This period of innovative design caused a sensation among established readers, attracted new fans, and helped to assure the book's run for another 10 years. Also included are the cover's color-key sheet, and a copy of the final proof. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with and image area of 10" x 15". Moderate toning and marginal moisture-staining. Very Good condition.
