DescriptionJack Kirby - Original Cover Art for Soul Love #1 (1972). Inspired by the blaxploitation films that were then so popular in the 1970s, as typified by "Blackula," "Shaft," and the short-lived TV show "Get Christy Love," Jack Kirby created a prototype comic book with romance stories about African-American couples, apparently hoping to appeal to a Black audience. Famous for bringing the "true romance" genre to comics, Jack Kirby hoped to strike black gold with this new DC magazine. Unfortunately, the b/w comic magazine was never printed (along with Jack's other DC mag, Spirit World #2), but several stories still exist from the effort. Here is the cover art for this piece of art from a forgotten period of Kirby's career. Hand-painted in grey watercolor washes, this elegant 11.5" x 16.5" piece on bristol paper shows Kirby's talent with a paintbrush, which is not often seen. The art is clean and contains the logo design and the title type treatments, which were pencilled by Kirby.
