Jack Kirby and Syd Shores Captain America #103 Cover Red Skull Original Art (Marvel, 1968). This awesome cover is one of the Red Skull's most iconic cover images! Not only that, this powerfully rendered Kirby masterpiece is one of the finest and most dramatic twice-up Silver Age Marvel covers we've ever seen-much less offered! A stunner of a cover, it truly epitomizes the magic of Marvel's 1960s peak, representing the gold standard of comic art collecting.
It's actually possible that this cover was a little bit too awesome in fact, as the Red Skull's rather maniacal facial expression was toned down a bit on the printed cover by slightly changing his eyes and mouth. But this is the high-octane, full-throttle original image as created by Jack "The King" Kirby, co-creator of both Captain America and the Red Skull. Also on the cover is Sharon Carter (aka Agent 13).
Captain America had just taken over the numbering of Tales of Suspense with issue #100 three months prior. This series was the first time Cap had his own solo book since 1954 (or 1949, depending on if you count the three-issue 1950s incarnation).
A truly impressive piece, it is all the more impressive in person as it was created at twice-up scale, making the ink over graphite image area a stunning 13.5" x 20"! Signed by Kirby in the lower right. The corner box, logo, and all header elements are a modern day recreation affixed to the board for presentation purposes. There is a small crease in the toned board that runs across the Skull's forehead, and there is a bit of glue residue there as well. The right side of the image area has a strip of whiteout and art correction where the panel border was moved slightly. The original art is in Very Good condition, and it comes with a copy of the comic book in Fine+ condition.
