Description

Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott Marvel's Greatest Comics #70 Cover Fantastic Four Original Art (Marvel, 1977). This dynamic Fantastic Four cover illustration was rendered in the classic 1960s Kirby/Sinnott prime period Fantastic Four style, looking as if it could have been from the vintage '60s FF run rather than from 1977. Joe Sinnott was Jack Kirby's 1960s inker for the Fantastic Four #88 (1969) original cover that this cover is based on, and it's possible that Sinnott rendered both pencils and inks on this artwork based on that earlier Kirby/Sinnott cover, as the attribution of the penciler is unknown. This piece was part of the group of art returned to Jack Kirby by Marvel in August, 1987, so we can assume that Marvel viewed Kirby as a primary contributor to the art to achieve the iconic look of the Fantastic Four #88 cover created in 1969.

It was no doubt later resold by Jack and/or Roz Kirby, as further evidenced by Jack's signature in the UPC box. To the best of our knowledge the original FF #88 cover has never surfaced in public or at auction, and, therefore, this rendition assumes even greater importance to the comic book art collecting community. The cover also features Crystal, the first character to be identified as an Inhuman by Marvel, and one of the most prominent. Crystal is of course featured in the new ABC series Marvel's Inhumans.

Rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 9.75" x 15". The logo and header info are all stat paste-up, with some production tape on them. There is a missing lower stat with the story title "A House There Was!" on it. This has left a bit of glue residue in its wake. Signed by Kirby in the UPC box. The board is lightly toned, and there are slits in the board to allow the logo to slide behind the characters. Otherwise, in Very Good condition.
