Description

Jack Kirby and Joe Simon Headline Comics #25 Cover Original Art (Prize, 1947). Few creative teams were more electrifying than those twin comic book dynamos -- Simon and Kirby. This hardboiled pre-Code scene by the masters of the compelling cover hook has an image area of 11.5" x 17". This shocker is missing its title logo and other type stats, but the piece has a fascinating historical side note. This cover was autographed and inscribed, "To Dave Wigransky -- best wishes and good luck -- Joe Simon and Jack Kirby." Comic historians may recall that David Pace Wigransky was the 14-year old teen who defended the pre-Code comic books in an articulate letter written in response to Dr. Fredric Wertham's May 29, 1948 Saturday Review of Literature article attacking "crime comics." Perhaps this cover was given to the passionate fan by Simon and Kirby in appreciation for his efforts on behalf of the recently embattled field. A copy of the comic book is included with this lot.
