Herb Trimpe, John Romita Sr., and Dan Adkins Sub-Mariner #9 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1969). This dramatic cover was the very first appearance of the infamous Serpent Crown! The malevolent mystical item made its debut in this issue's story "The Spell of the Serpent!" written by Roy Thomas. The Crown would turn up again and again in the Marvel Universe, most notably in a long story arc in the Avengers (1975-76). This striking cover was penciled by Herb Trimpe and inked by Dan Adkins, with some art alterations by John Romita Sr. (Check Lady Dorma's art and hand placement.) The corner box and logo are printed paste-ups. The top of the serpent idol's head and Lady Dorma's hand are original art. Created in ink over graphite and blue pencil on Curtiss Way cover stock Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Toned and in Very Good condition. From the Glenn Danzig Collection.
